Maths
At Scargill Junior School, we are committed to nurturing a deep and lasting understanding of mathematics in our pupils. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that students not only grasp mathematical concepts thoroughly but also develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. We place a strong emphasis on the development of mathematical vocabulary and the ability to articulate and explain their thinking clearly. Through engaging and challenging lessons, we aim to foster a love of learning, encouraging curiosity and a positive attitude towards mathematics. By providing a supportive and inclusive environment, we prepare our students for future success in mathematics and other fields, equipping them with the confidence and skills to apply their knowledge in real-life contexts.
Mastery Approach
We are committed to embedding a Maths Mastery approach across our curriculum, aligning with the NCETM’s principles to ensure every pupil develops a deep, secure, and adaptable understanding of mathematics. This approach moves beyond rote learning, fostering a strong conceptual grasp that enables students to apply their mathematical knowledge in diverse contexts and solve problems creatively. Central to our practice is the belief that all pupils can learn and enjoy mathematics, promoting a positive attitude towards the subject. We focus on developing mathematical learning behaviours where pupils engage fully, reason logically, and seek to make connections between concepts. Our teachers continually enhance their specialist knowledge, collaborating to refine and improve their teaching strategies. The curriculum is designed with a coherent and detailed sequence of essential content, supporting sustained progression over time and ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to master the concepts necessary for future success.
Maths No Problem
Our school is implementing the Maths — No Problem! scheme as a core part of our strategy to embed the mastery approach in mathematics teaching. This scheme is designed to support deep, long-term understanding by encouraging all pupils to move through content at the same pace, with an emphasis on problem-solving, reasoning, and conceptual understanding. Through the use of carefully structured lessons, visual representations, and collaborative learning, Maths — No Problem! aligns with the principles of mastery by ensuring that every child develops a secure and thorough grasp of mathematical concepts before progressing. This approach promotes confidence, resilience, and a love for mathematics across all year groups.
Times Tables Rock Stars
We actively promote the learning and recall of times tables through the use of TTRockstars, an engaging online platform designed to build speed and accuracy in multiplication and division facts. We recognise that secure knowledge of times tables forms the foundation for many areas of mathematics, and TTRockstars provides a fun and competitive environment that motivates pupils to practise regularly. Through individual challenges, class competitions, and school-wide events, we encourage all children to improve their fluency while developing a positive attitude towards maths. This consistent practice helps pupils build confidence and supports their overall mathematical progress.
